Overview

Heritage sites often face the challenge of engaging visitors with immersive experiences that are both informative and accessible. Historiscope addresses this by providing an on-site Augmented Reality (AR) viewing scope, inspired by traditional tourist telescopes. This device allows visitors to peer into the past, viewing historically accurate reconstructions directly overlaid onto the present landscape, without the need for personal devices or app downloads. Designed to withstand various outdoor conditions, Historiscope ensures a seamless and durable addition to any heritage site.

Impact & Results

Since its installation, Historiscope has been experienced by thousands of visitors at Stirling Castle. User surveys indicate that 78.6% of participants felt that Historiscope enhanced their understanding of the castle's history, and 94% reported an overall enjoyable experience. The device has successfully provided an educational and entertaining medium, enriching the visitor experience by seamlessly blending historical accuracy with innovative AR technology.

Collaboration

In partnership with Historic Environment Scotland, Historiscope was installed at Stirling Castle in March 2022. This collaboration focused on creating an engaging, narrative-driven experience centered around the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. The device was strategically placed in the Queen Anne Gardens, offering visitors a reconstructed view of the Forework Towers as they stood in the past. Feedback from initial installations led to design enhancements, such as adjusting the height and incorporating a step, making the experience accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages, including children.
